Community Message for York Residents – Illegal E‑Bikes

North Yorkshire Police would like to reassure residents across York that robust and proactive action is being taken to tackle the use of illegal e‑bikes in our communities.

We know many of you are concerned about dangerously modified or high‑powered e‑bikes being ridden without insurance or in a manner that puts pedestrians, cyclists and other road users at risk. These vehicles can reach significant speeds when altered and must meet the same legal requirements as mopeds or motorbikes.

What we are doing:

Increased patrols in areas where illegal e‑bike use has been reported, including the city centre, riverside paths and residential neighbourhoods.

Targeted enforcement operations, stopping riders, checking compliance and seizing illegal or uninsured vehicles.

Working with schools, colleges and retailers to raise awareness of the law around e‑bikes and e‑scooters.

Using community intelligence to identify hotspots and repeat offenders.

Issuing penalties, including fines, points on licences and vehicle seizures where appropriate.

How to report concerns:

If you witness dangerous riding, a rider putting people at immediate risk, or a situation that feels like an emergency, call 999.

For ongoing concerns, information about suspected illegal e‑bikes, or to report non‑urgent incidents, call 101 or report online via the North Yorkshire Police website.

Your reports help us target our patrols and take swift action. We remain committed to keeping York’s streets, cycle routes and public spaces safe for everyone.
